Undercrown by Drew Estate

DESCRIPTION: The Undercrown blend was originally created by the torcedores of Drew Estate that roll the Liga Privada cigars. As the story goes, they had gotten fond of rolling and smoking Liga Privada’s and the management asked them to stop because they were smoking too many. So, they created their own “liga privada” for themselves to smoke. They used many of the same tobaccos that are used in the Liga Privada, but not the exact same leaves.

The wrapper is a unique strain of Mexican San Andreas Negro seed whose harvest is intentionally delayed by 4+ weeks to allow for additional field and sun time resulting in a higher natural sugar content and a richer, creamier flavor. “Otapan” is the name of the farm on which the wrapper is grown. The leaf priming is referred to as, “Último Corte,” which translates to “last cut”; a reference to its delayed harvesting.

The cigars come in unfinished boxes of 25 cigars, and in five sizes: This week’s featured stogie is the 6-inch by 52 ring gauge Gran Toro.

Torano Family Cigars: Vault A-008

Torano Family Cigars: Vault A-008

BACKGROUND: Recently, Charlie Toraño and Bruce Lewis revisited the a book that has been tucked away in a bank vault. This book has held the company’s trade secrets and contains the blends for every cigar that they have blended since 1982. In this book they have included all production blends, but also those that had tremendous promise but didn’t meet their highest standards.

Charlie and Bruce perused the book and discovered an intriguing, yet unreleased blend called Liga A-008, which was first documented in the year 2000. The original Blend A-008 consisted of a shade grown Nicaraguan Colorado wrapper and full flavored filler tobaccos from Esteli and Condega. The binder was a Honduran leaf from the Jamastrán Valley. The entire blend was good, but was missing something that eluded the family until just recently.

Because they thought blend A-008 had so much potential, the Toraño family recreated he blend and worked with it. And after numerous modifications, it was discovered that the missing ingredient to the original blend was tobacco grown in a region that the Toraño family did not have access to until recently.

That region is Ometepe, Nicaragua. The addition of a second ligero binder from Ometepe brought another layer of richness and strength to the original blend, making it truly worthy of carrying the Toraño name.

The Toraño Vault A-008 is available in 4 sizes: a 6 x 50 Toro, a 6.1 x 52 Torpedo, a limited release Corona Gorda and the cigar I’m featuring today the 5-inch by 52 ring gauge Robusto.

Red Nectar Ale is an Amber Ale that is brewed in Paso Robles California, at Firestone Walker Brewery, which is where I go for my beer kegs for the Stogie Fresh Kegerator.

C and C Cigars: Corojo Robusto

DESCRIPTION: The C&C Corojo features a reddish brown Ecuadorian Corojo wrapper. Corojo is the leaf that made Cuban cigars famous and although much of today’s Corojo is a hybrid of the original it nonetheless is one of my favorite wrapper leaves.

C&C Corojo: box of cigars

The cigar sports a Dominican binder and a filler blend comprised of Dominican long-fillers. The Corojo is finished with a triple cap at the head, which also caps the attempt to model these cigars after the old Cuban style.

At right around $4.00 per stick, these are definitely worth a second look. And that’s exactly what I have planned for you today as I feature the 5-inch by 50 ring gauge C&C Corojo Robusto.

FEATURED LIBATION: Mbeya Reserve Coffee from Tanzania

Today’s Tanzanian coffee comes from Mbeya, which is in the southern part of the country. Mbeya coffee farms sit high on the volcanic slopes that border Lake Nyassa and this coffee today is 100% Arabica and it comes from our friends at Gevalia Kaffe Company.
