Episode 307: Quintero y Hermano Londres Extra

DESCRIPTION: It has been said that Quintero cigars have a completely unique flavor profile among Cuban cigars. That profile has been described as a combination of strong earthiness and grassy flavor that creates a countryside feel and aroma of the native Cuban soil. It is also said that Quintero’s smooth, medium bodied taste makes it ideal for those seeking to experience the taste of Habanos at an affordable price.

Quintero y Hermano Londres Extra

Up until 2002, these cigars were all machine-made, but according to Habanos S. A., they are currently totally hand made using short filler tobacco.

This week’s featured Habano is the 4.9-inch by 40 ring gauge Quintero Londres Extra.

FEATURED LIBATION: Costa Rican/Bolivian blend coffee
This is a blend of two previous coffees. I used 1/2 pound of Bolivian Beneficio Buenaventura and 1/4 pound of the Costa Rican Los Nacientes.

The Los Nacientes comes from the Aguacatein mountains in Costa Rica from a family-owned plantation in the highlands of the Alajuela province. Beneficio Buenaventura Lot 45 is grown in the Caranavi growing region of Bolivia.

Nestor Miranda Art Deco Robust

DOC’S CIGAR POSTSCRIPT: Nestor Miranda Art Deco
This week my postscript review is on the Nestor Miranda Art Deco, which I first featured on the SF5 podcast in Episode 245 on Sunday, October 31, 2010. These stogies have now been resting in my humidor for 1 year, 5.1 months and I pulled out my last samples of this batch this past week for this second and final review.

Episode 306: Quesada España Short Robusto

DESCRIPTION: The Quesada family brought Spanish Tobacconists to the Dominican Republic to work on a cigar exclusively for Spain, and after a week of blending the Quesada España was born.

They produced a cigar that would be available in three popular Spanish sizes and with a lighter wrapper color in keeping with the traditional Cuban wrapper style.

The Quesada España possesses a distinctive taste, yet is reminiscent of the Cuban cigars the Spanish are familiar with.

Although the manufacturer has maintained that this cigar will remain just for the Spanish market, some boxes have already been shipped into the U.S. to select Quesada account holders.

This week’s featured stogie is the 4-inch by 50 ring gauge Quesada España Petit Robusto.

FEATURED LIBATION: Limu-Jimma Coffee, which comes from Western Ethiopia.
Today’s featured coffee comes from Alaga Sekala, which is a cooperative wet mill near Jimma, in western Ethiopia. The mill is at just over 6,000 feet altitude but most of the coffee comes from the higher zones surrounding the site, from 6200 to nearly 7,000 feet altitude.

The label on my package of green beans said that a roast level of City to City+, which amounts to a light to medium roast, is ideal for this coffee. “Darker roasts have nice creamy chocolate tones, but lose some of the fruit and jasmine notes.” Well, I roasted this batch to Full City to Full City +, which is a darker roast.

Grand Marnier Torpedo

DOC’S CIGAR POSTSCRIPT: Grand Marnier by Ted’s Cigars
This week, my postscript review is on the Grand Marnier Cigar. I first featured this stick on the Stogie Fresh 5 podcast in Episode 244 on Friday, October 22, 2010. Now, after resting for a total of 1 year, 4.5 months, I pulled out another couple of samples to make this review. By the way, I don’t keep these in my humidor. I leave them in a foam tube rack in my office. It’s really not necessary to store tubed cigars in a humidor unless the tube has already been opened or if the tube’s seal has been compromised.

Episode 305: Nestor Miranda Grand Reserve

DESCRIPTION: Handmade in Don Pepin Garcia’s Nicaraguan factory, Nestor Miranda Grand Reserve is a blend comprised of all Nicaraguan filler and binder with a Connecticut Broadleaf maduro wrapper.

The project started off with Nestor Miranda wanting to add an ultra-premium cigar to his portfolio. As usual, he went to the now-famous ‘My Father’ cigar factory to have this special project manufactured. Made in Nicaragua, Grand Reserve was created as a small batch cigar with only 10,000 sticks made.

When it comes to buying them, you won’t have to spend too much time in the humidor; the Grand Reserve comes in a single size. Which means the only real choice is whether you get down with some singles, or cough up around $100 for a box of 10.

Whichever you decide, this week’s featured cigar will be the 6.25 x 52 ring gauge box-pressed torpedo.

TODAY’S LIBATION: Costa Rica Los Nacientes Coffee
The Aguacatein mountains in Costa Rica provide the backdrop for the cooling fog that blankets high-altitude coffee trees with a gentle mist. This is where Carlos Salas and his family preside over Los Nacientes, their family-owned plantation in the highlands of the Alajuela province.

Episode 304: La Flor Dominicana Cameroon Cabinet Chisel

DESCRIPTION: The Cameroon Cabinet, which debuted in 2007,  sports a classy band, and comes in six different sizes. The cigar consists of Dominican and Nicaraguan filler tobacco held together by a Dominican binder and then enveloped in a great-looking Cameroon wrapper.

LFD Cameroon Cabinet Chisel

When creating the current iteration of the Cameroon Cabinets, Litto Gomez wanted to reflect the La Flor Dominicana of today, which meant that he wanted a full-bodied blend. You can think of the La Flor Dominicana Cameroon Cabinet as a Cameroon stogie on steroids.

The cigar comes in six sizes including a quite rare Lancero. But perhaps the most sought-after shape and size is the one I’m featuring today. By popular demand, in December of 2011, La Flor Dominicana released the Cameroon Cabinet in its own quintessential vitola, the 6-inch by 52 ring gauge Chisel.

FEATURED LIBATION: Hemp Ale by Firestone Walker Brewery
Hemp Ale is a one-of-a-kind brew that boasts a unique herb-accented flavor that is attributable to the incorporation of hemp seeds into the brewing process. Due to legal restrictions with hemp seeds, this ale is only available in California. The style of this brew is an American Brown Ale. The Hemp weighs in at 5.7% ABV and registers a 32.0 on the IBU scale. (Medium)
