Episode 314: Chinnock Cellars Limited Edition Terroir

Play

DESCRIPTION: Brian Chinnock of Chinnock Cellars Cigars says that his newest blend, appropriately called “Terroir,” incorporates tobacco leaves from several different regions to create a balance of the best qualities of each region.

Chinnock Cellars Terroir Torpedo

For the filler blend, Chinnock uses Seco leaf from the Dominican Republic and combines it with Viso leaf from Nicaragua. A double Volado leaf binder from Nicaragua is used for its combustion qualities and the cigar is then capped with a Sun Grown Ecuadorian Habano wrapper.

All Chinnock cigars have been blended specifically to go with the luscious Chinnock Cellars Napa wines and the cigars are boxed in a very special “Barrel” box, which resembles a wine barrel.

This week’s featured cigar is the Chinnock Cellars Limited Edition Terroir Torpedo.

DOC’S CIGAR POSTSCRIPT: Tatuaje La Verite 2008 Churchill
This week’s postscript review is on the La Verite 2008 from Pete Johnson and Tatuaje. I first featured this cigar in Episode 253 of the Stogie Fresh 5 podcast on Saturday, January 1, 2011. These cigars have now been aging in my humidor for 2 years, 10.4 months and I pulled out a couple of samples this past week for a revisit.

Episode 313: RoMa Craft Tobac Intemperance BA XXI Avarice

Play

DESCRIPTION: Despite the dismal failure of the temperance movement and prohibition, the desire of some political types to legislate the freedoms of Americans continues to march on. The Temperance Movement seems to be following the same path today in the form of the anti-tobacco movement, which intends nothing short of another prohibition, this time against tobacco.

This week’s featured cigar is the first new blend since the formation of RoMa Craft Tobac. It’s called the Intemperance and is produced in the Esteli, Nicaragua factory owned by Rosales and Martin.

The branding for Intemperance evokes the history of prohibition in the United States and features a logo inspired by the temperance movement, a political propaganda poster produced in 1855.

This week’s featured cigar is the Intemperance BA XXI. The BA stands for Brazil Arapiraca and the XXI represents the 21st Amendment to the Constitution of the United States, that which repealed prohibition.

This week’s featured Intemperance is the 4.5-inch by 52 ring gauge Short Robusto.

FEATURED LIBATION: Ethiopian Harrar Coffee
Our libation of the week is Ethiopian Harrar. I purchased the green beans online at The Captain’s Coffee and I roasted them this past week. In fact, I roasted them while I was smoking my first sample of the Intemperance Brazilian Arapiraca and, after I tasted the coffee, I knew I had to pair it with this week’s featured stogie.

Episode 312: San Lotano Oval

Play

DESCRIPTION: San Lotano Oval features a truly unique shape and an impressive pedigree of tobacco. The best way to describe the shape would be an oval shaped box-press, if you can imagine that. The Oval features a Habano 2000 wrapper that is aged over four years.

Kris Kachaturian and AJ Fernandez

The Habano 2000 wrapper covers Nicaraguan and Honduran filler tobaccos that mirror the same well-aged flavor of the wrapper and are perfect compliments to each other. The extra aging gives the blend a refined quality and a smooth, consistent flavor.

This week’s featured Oval is the 6.5-inch by 54 ring gauge Toro.

FEATURED LIBATION: The Balvenie 15-year Single Barrel Scotch

The Balvenie Single Barrel Aged 15 years is drawn from a single traditional oak whisky cask of a single distillation. Each bottling forms a limited edition of no more than 350 hand-numbered bottles – so each bottle is unique and unrepeatable.

Episode 311: La Palina El Diario

Play

DESCRIPTION: The La Palina cigar brand dates back to 1896 and was produced by the Congress Cigar Company, owned by Samuel Paley. Paley manufactured cigars in Philadelphia and La Palina became an increasingly popular national brand in the early 1900s.

La Palina Torpedo

In June of 2010, the La Palina cigar brand was resurrected by yet another Paley–Bill–grandson of the founder. Bill decided to go in a different direction from his father and return to his family’s roots, not through broadcasting, but by returning to the cigar business and resurrecting the old family label: La Palina.

This week’s featured cigar, the La Palina El Diario, is rolled at the Raices Cubanas factory in Honduras. The La Palina El Diario is a medium bodied cigar that is built upon a base of Nicaraguan Corojo and Criollo filler tobaccos. Th¬e cigar sports double binders from Honduras and is capped with a Honduran Corojo 99 Rosado wrapper. This week’s featured Diario is the 6.1-inch by 52 ring gauge Torpedo.

FEATURED LIBATION: Johnnie Walker Double Black
Johnnie Walker Double Black is the newest addition to the Johnnie Walker family of Scotch whiskies. It was formerly only available in global duty-free shops, but it’s been released, for a limited time, to the mass market. Double Black starts with the Black Label template, and from there, the distiller adds a blend of both naturally smoky aged whiskies and specially selected whiskies aged in deeply charred barrels. This results in a malt that has more peat character a smokier dram than the original Black Label.
