Episode 328 La Palina Family Series “Babe”

Play

La Palina Family Series BabeDESCRIPTION: La Palina is a historic cigar brand that was originally founded in 1896 by Samuel Paley. The brand was reborn in early 2010, 84 years after the original company closed its doors. Bill Paley called the first cigar “1896” to honor the year Samuel founded the Congress Cigar Company. Then, in September of 2010, Bill Paley introduced the La Palina “Family Series” offering a tribute to the family members behind the brand. These include the “Pasha,” “Babe,” “Alison” and “Little Bill”.

This week’s featured stogie is named for Bill Paley’s mother, Barbara “Babe” Cushing Paley. As Truman Capote once observed, Babe was a woman of “only one fault… she was perfect. Otherwise, she was perfect.” Babe was one of the last century’s icons of fashion and style. She maintained her position on the best-dressed list fourteen times before being inducted into the Fashion Hall of Fame in 1958.

Introducing this week’s featured cigar, the 5.25” x 50 ring gauge “Babe.”

Episode 327 The Griffin’s Special Edition for 2012

Play

DESCRIPTION: The mythological creature known as the “griffin,” has lent its name to The Griffin’s premium cigars. This legendary creature with the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle was known for guarding treasure and priceless possessions. As the lion was traditionally considered the king of the beasts and the eagle was the king of the birds, the griffin was thought to be an especially powerful and majestic creature.

The Griffin's Special Edition for 2012

Boasting the sign of this heraldic beast on their bands and packaging, these fine cigars from the Dominican Republic have achieved great success worldwide.

The popular and renowned Griffin’s Special Edition 2012 is today’s featured stogie. The cigars are presented in a sleek black wooden box with high-quality printed moss green felt inlay on the lid inside.

The filler is a combination of especially long aged, Dominican Piloto Cubano, San Vicente and Criollo tobaccos, which are refined with a hint of Nicaraguan Jalapa Especial and aromatic Peruvian Pelo de Oro, which are then wrapped in the mild Olor binder. The finishing touch is a sun-ripened Ecuadorian Special sun grown wrapper.

The Griffin’s Special Edition 2012 is available in a limited quantity of just 3,000 boxes worldwide.

This week’s featured stogie is the Griffin’s 5.5-inch by 46 ring gauge Special Edition number 28 Corona Extra.

Episode 326 Partagás 1845

Play

DESCRIPTION: General Cigar Company recently introduced the new Partagás 1845, a four-cigar collection that embodies 167 years of heritage and expert cigar making. This new take on the venerable brand is a departure from the traditional Cameroon-wrapped expressions of Partagás.

Partagas 1845

In creating Partagás 1845, Vice President of Operations, Jhonys Diaz collaborated with General Manager of Operations, Francisco Rodriguez and Production Manager Yuri Guillen. This team started out with more than 50 different blends from the company’s vast tobacco library. Together with guidance from cigar icon Benji Menendez, and with input from supervisors from General Cigar’s Dominican and Honduran factories, the blends were continuously test-smoked and tweaked until the final blend was chosen by General Cigar’s Innovation Team.

Partagas 1845

To achieve the characteristic, full flavor of Partagás 1845, the blend team chose Dominican Piloto Cubano, which was blended with Nicaraguan tobacco from three separate growing regions. Some of the filler tobaccos are aged in Dominican rum barrels, a process that enhances their flavor, according to General Cigar.

The Connecticut Habano binder is unique unto itself. It was developed as a result of General Cigar’s research and development initiative. This proprietary binder leaf took nine years to develop and punctuates the blend with a touch of sweetness. The finishing touch is an Ecuadorian Habano Viso wrapper, which dresses Partagás 1845 in a unique color and hearty texture.

The collection debuted with four sizes, each packed in boxes of 20 cigars. This week’s featured Partagás 1845 is, the 5.5” x 49 ring gauge Robusto.
