Episode 347 Wilson Adams 2012 Corona Gorda

Play

DESCRIPTION: Wilson Adams is a relatively new cigar company whose inaugural cigar is made at the Nestor Placensia factory in Estelí, Nicaragua. It took 8 months and 30-40 different blends before they came up with the one that the company was ready to release. The cigar is composed of a blend of Nicaraguan filler and binder tobaccos and is wrapped in a dark Ecuadorian Habano leaf.

They currently have one cigar line with four different sizes: the No. 2- a standard 5 x 50 Robusto, the No. 4, a 6 x 52 Toro, the No. 5, a 6 ½ x 56 Toro Grande, and the cigar I’m featuring today, a 5.87-inch by 46 ring gauge No. 3 Corona Gorda. Pricing for the cigars is quite reasonable with a pricing scale that runs between $6.50 and $8.50 per stick, depending on the size.

FEATURED LIBATION: Castoro Cellars 2006 Due Mila Otto
This is the eighth version of this Bordeaux based blend. This wine is only produced when the winemaker feels that the harvest is outstanding enough to warrant making this wine. This wine comes in 750ml bottles and weighs in at 15.9% ABV. The cost is $35.00 per bottle or $26.25 for Wine Club Members.

DOC’S CIGAR POSTSCRIPT: Toraño Vault A-008 Robusto
I first featured the Toraño Vault A-008 in Episode 297 back on Sunday, December 11, 2011. Now, after over a year of extra age, I pulled out my last two sticks for this postscript review. These cigars have been resting in my humidor for a total of 1 year, 3 months and 13 days.

Episode 346 Rocky Patel Vintage 2003

Play

DESCRIPTION: The latest Vintage blend from Rocky Patel, the 2003 Cameroon, was introduced in the summer of 2011 and features a striking African Cameroon wrapper that surrounds an 8-year-old Nicaraguan binder and 8-year aged filler tobaccos from the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua. Ostensibly, the filler and binder tobaccos all come from the 2003 Vintage. The Vintage 2003 is purported to be a powerhouse of flavor and is said to be fuller in body than the majority of the vintage offerings.

This week’s review will feature the 5.5-inch by 50 ring gauge Vintage 2003 Robusto.

FEATURED LIBATION: Havana Port from Paso Port Wine Company
This week’s featured libation is a tawny style port blended then aged in retired Cognac barrels prior to bottling. This port was blended to pair perfectly with a cigar and it turns out that winemaker Steve is a cigar smoker and he wanted something to drink along with a good stogie.

Only 120 cases of the Havana blend were produced. This is a blend that uses Portuguese varietal grapes grown in the Paso Robles appellation or what is called the Paso Robles AVA: American Viticultural Area. The wine weighs in at 19% ABV

Episode 345 Regius White Label

Play

DESCRIPTION: The second cigar line from Regius of London Cigars is called the Regius White Label and possesses no less of an esteemed pedigree. The White Label is a Dominican puro made by another icon in the cigar industry: Manuel Quesada at his MATASA factory in the Dominican Republic. The cigar features a Dominican Habano Vuelta Arriba wrapper, a relatively new leaf that has been used in such cigars as the Quesada Tributo and the Schrader Hispaniola. This week’s featured cigar is the 6-inch by 50 ring gauge Regius White Label Toro.

FEATURED LIBATION: Trader Joe’s Speyside Single Malt 18 Year scotch
This week’s featured libation is for all you value-minded folks. It is the Trader Joe’s Speyside Single Malt 18 Year scotch whisky (1993). Would you believe you can pick up an 18-year old scotch for just $26 a bottle? Well, indeed you can, but will it cut the muster?

The label on this bottle is pretty sparse on details because the bottling company has been prohibited to reveal the name of the distributor. It says that this is 18 year-old single malt from Speyside and that it was distilled in 1993 and bottled (probably) in 2011 at 40% ABV. Nevertheless, this is a bargain-basement 18-year scotch.

Buena Vista Reserva Sublimes

DOC’S CIGAR POSTSCRIPT: Buena Vista Reserva
This week’s postscript review is the Buena Vista Reserva, which was first featured on the Stogie Fresh podcast in Episode 289 on Sunday, October 2, 2011. These sticks, which were first released in the summer of 2011, have now been resting for a total of 1 year, 5 months, 15 days, prior to this review. I sat down this past week with a couple of samples and am now ready to give you the scoop on how an extra year or so in my humidor has affected the flavor and body profile and other characteristics of this cigar.

Episode 344 Davidoff Year of the Snake

Play

DESCRIPTION: Concurrent with the Chinese Year of the Snake, Davidoff is launching the new 2013 “Year of the Snake” Edition cigars with exclusive limited-edition accessories. The Davidoff cigar brand is synonymous with luxury and therefore the “Year of the Snake” cigar is not just an unusual name given a limited edition cigar line, but also represents the quintessential quality and style of Davidoff.

Davidoff Year of the Snake box

The tobacco for this stylish cigar starts with a filler blend of Dominican Piloto Cubano, Dominican San Vicente and Dominican Yamasá Hybrid 192. This blend is wrapped in a Dominican San Vicente Seco binder for good burning and aromatic characteristics. And the crowing achievement is an Ecuadorian Hybrid 702 Sun Grown wrapper, which is the same leaf that crowned one of my all time favorite Davidoff limited edition cigars, the 2009 Seleccion 702.

The octagonal, red lacquered wooden box sports a velvet lid liner and contains eight cigars. This week’s featured cigar is the 7-inch by 48 ring gauge Year of the Snake Churchill.

FEATURED LIBATION: Gin Buck
The Gin Buck is a traditional cocktail that was originally made with gin and authentic ginger ale. I will be making mine in the traditional way with gin, ginger beer and limejuice, over ice cubes.
