Episode 359 Black Patch Kenbano Gran Toro

Play

BACKGROUND: In the western region of Kentucky is an area known as “Black Patch,” where the dark, fertile soil has been used to grow tobacco for over 150 years. Originally used for growing Burley tobacco, these rich fields are now used by Eric Mcanallen of Black Patch Cigars to grow Kentucky Broadleaf and a new proprietary Habano seed called, Kenbano (Kentucky + Habano).

After curing, Mcanallen’s Black-Patch-raised tobacco is shipped to the Dominican Republic, where it is fermented, aged and eventually blended and rolled into cigars at the farms and factories of Jorge F. Carbonell. The Kenbano sports a Dominican Havana Vuelta Abajo wrapper that surrounds a Dominican Criollo 98 binder and the filler tobacco includes USA/Kentucky Kenbano 2007, Dominican Piloto Cubano and Dominican Criollo 98 Bonao. Only two sizes of this special edition cigar will be released: a 5 x 50 Robusto and the cigar I’m featuring today, a 6-inch x 54 ring gauge Gran Toro.

This whiskey is produced at the scenic Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky. Like Bookers bourbon, it is named after the Master Distiller, or Distiller Emeritus of the distillery it comes from.

This is a single barrel bourbon and, unlike most single barrel bourbons, this carries no age statement. It is simply bottled when it’s namesake, Elmer T. Lee determines the barrel is at its peak.

Episode 357 Crush & Roll West 2013 Tour at Camacho Cigars

Play

BACKGROUND: A year ago in March, I was in Honduras visiting Camacho Cigars and, subsequently, I worked with a team of people who together forged a partnership to bring several lucky people to Honduras and Camacho Cigars this year. Members of the Camacho management team worked together with the planning team of Crush & Roll West, a 2-day cigar and wine event on the Central Coast of California.

Camacho Cigars would provide the transportation to and from all points of travel while in Honduras. They would provide lodging, meals and of course a top-shelf cigar education. On our part, Crush & Roll West would organize and promote the raffle, which would eventually produce two all-expenses paid trips and five more partial expenses paid trips. A year later–just two weeks ago, in fact–I traveled with 7 lucky Crush & Roll West raffle winners and 4 of my associates on the Crush & Roll West planning committee, back to Honduras to complete yet another wondrous experience in the land of cigars. This week’s special Stogie Fresh 5 episode will be devoted to the 2013 Crush & Roll West tour at Camacho Cigars.

FEATURED LIBATION: Nica Libre, made with Flor de Caña 7 Year Gran Reserva
If you remember, I featured the Flor de Caña 18-year rum in my last show 2-weeks ago. This time the rum is the 7-year aged version of which you can get a bottle of this rum in the states for around $20. I paid $22 for a bottle at Bevmo. I will be mixing the rum with Coke to make a Nica Libre.
