Episode 376 CAO Flathead Camshaft

Play

BACKGROUND: Flathead features a jet-black Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper, an Ecuadorian Connecticut binder and a filler blend that is heavy on Nicaraguan leaf.

01

In keeping with CAO’s unconventional approach to packaging, Flathead gives a nod to the muscle car engine, with a lid that’s easily removed and used as wall art. There’s also a collectible, pin-up girl flysheet that’s enclosed in the box.

With that in mind, this week’s featured Flathead is the 5.5” x 54 ring gauge Camshaft.

FEATURED LIBATION: Boatswain Double IPA
This beer is brewed exclusively for Trader Joe’s. It weighs in at 8.4% ABV and 75 IBU’s. The label says, and I quote, “Bosun beers are unique brews made in small batches. Our Double IPA has a pleasant bitterness from the extra hops. This is one big, bold beer.”

Episode 375 La Mia Corona

Play

BACKGROUND: Legendary blender Arsenio Ramos headed up the team that blended the La Mia cigar. They used Aganorsa tobacco leaf from the Jalapa Valley’s famed La Mia farm. This represents the first time tobacco from the La Mia farm has been used to create a cigar since the farm was purchased from the Nicaraguan government by Eduardo Fernández of Casa Fernandez.

The cigars are blended with dual Nicaraguan binders and are wrapped in a Nicaraguan Corojo ’99 Rosado wrapper. The filler blend also includes one leaf of Criollo ‘98 from the Aganorsa farm in Estelí.

All La Mia cigars are bunched using the traditional entubado style and are finished with a traditional triple cap and flag head. The number of boxes will vary from year to year depending on the availability of tobacco.

This week’s featured La Mia is the 5-inch by 42 ring gauge Corona.

This full-bodied brew gets some of its deep copper/brown color and sweet toffee flavors from kettle caramelization due to an extended boil.
This beer weighs in at 11% ABV and 35 on the IBU scale. The company calls it a Strong Scotch Ale.
