Episode 393 CroMagnon Aquitaine Mode 5

Play

BACKGROUND: The CroMagnon Aquitane was launched by RoMa Craft Tobac during the summer of 2012. The Aquitaine is a spinoff of its namesake the CroMagnon and contains the same blend as the CroMagnon, including its unique Cameroon binder.

Though the Aquitaine features the same long-filler, full-bodied blend found in the original CroMagnon, the Aquitaine blazes its own path by featuring an Ecuadorian Habano Ligero wrapper. This is an eighth and ninth priming ligero leaf that is thick, oily and with the kind of texture that only comes from being higher on the plant and closer to the rays of the sun. The Aquitaine comes in 6 different sizes and the cigar I’m featuring today is the 5-inch by 50 ring gauge, Mode 5 Perfecto.

Bookers-BourbonFEATURED LIBATION: Booker’s Bourbon
Booker’s bourbon is the signature bourbon of Booker Noe, who was the master distiller at Jim Beam for 40 years. He introduced Booker’s True Barrel Bourbon in 1992. Inspired by a 200-year-old tradition, Booker’s was the first bourbon bottled straight-from-the-barrel, uncut and unfiltered. Booker’s is bottled at its natural proof of between 121 and 127, and aged between six and eight years. Add spring water to customize the taste and finish to your palate.

First created as a holiday gift for his special friends, Booker’s whiskey was so well-received that he decided to make it available to bourbon lovers worldwide.

Episode 392 Lou Rodriguez Habano Rosado Corona

Play

BACKGROUND: The Lou Rodriguez portfolio started in early 2011 with the release of the Edición Premier and Edición Reserva lines. That was followed in 2012 with the Connecticut and Habano-Rosado lines and finally the Lou Rod, a Nicaraguan puro, was released in 2013.

Habano-Rosado

Like all of Lou Rodriguez’s cigars, with the exception of the Connecticut, the Habano-Rosado is constructed in a box-pressed shape. The wrapper for the cigar is an Ecuadorian Habano Rosado, the binder is Nicaraguan, and the filler is a blend of Nicaraguan tobaccos.

There are 5 sizes of the Habano Rosado line and the cigar I’m featuring today is the 5.5 inch by 42 ring gauge Corona.

pierre-ferrand-cigareFEATURED LIBATION: Pierre Ferrand Cigare Cognac
Based on what I have read on the subject, apparently the “cigar” cognacs aren’t gimmicks; they’re specially selected blends that are notably mellow, round and woody, which is just the thing we would like to savor between puffs. There are many notable cigar cognac blends; from Hine Cognac, Davidoff, Pinar del Rio and, of course, the Pierre Ferrand, among many others.

Most experts have said that the Cognacs go best with a medium-bodied cigar. If that’s true, we may have the quintessential match between this Lou Rodriguez and the Pierre Ferrand.

This bottle of fine cognac runs around $60-$70/750ml bottle.

Episode 391 Davidoff Colorado Claro Aniversario No. 3

Play

BACKGROUND: Described by Davidoff as being Cubanesque in flavor, the Colorado Claro lends itself to a more intense flavor profile. The cigar is made at the Davidoff factory in the Dominican Republic and the tobaccos can come from up to four different harvest years.

Davidoff Colorado Claro

The Colorado Claro series of cigars has been produced in very small quantities for cigar enthusiasts and aficionados who seek an exceptional taste experience, but shipments to retailers have been, and continue to be, sparse.

The distinguishing feature of this cigar is the dark and seductive, reddish brown Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper with a much stronger flavor profile. The sun-grown wrapper is rare and only a select few of these leaves meet the standard for this particular cigar.

Davidoff Colorado Claro

The Davidoff Colorado Claro series expanded recently with the addition of a new size in the line. That new size will be the featured cigar of this week. And it is, the highly regarded, 6-inch by 50 ring gauge Aniversario No. 3.

brazil-coffee-beansFEATURED LIBATION: Brazil Coromandel Coffee from the Sao Joao cooperative
Our featured coffee is a Coromandel, which is a coffee from the savana-like area called the Cerrado. Coromandel lies at an altitude of 1000 meters or about 3,300 feet. The farm on which these beans are grown is strictly a family operation: José Silvone is the father, working with his two sons Reginaldo and Cristiano.
