Episode 406 One Shot One Kill (OSOK) by EH Cigars

Play

BACKGROUND: The Brand One Shot One Kill (OSOK) was created to represent a lifestyle movement, which captures chronicles and memorializes a lifestyle that only few can truly understand. From the gritty borders of Mexico, to the slums of Cuba, Edgar has captured some of the most notorious images from all walks of life.

OSOK2

The One Shot One Kill cigar is a Nicaraguan puro made at the undisclosed Nicaraguan factory under the Fabricas Unidas production.

Each of the four sizes is offered in 10-count boxes in one of two styles. There are two Perfectos and two shaggy foot parejos. The cigar I’m featuring today is the 6 1/2 x 60 Cabron.

FEATURED LIBATION: Hudson Manhattan Rye Whiskey
In 2001, the current owners purchased the Tuthilltown Gristmill with the intention of opening a rock climber’s ranch. Instead, they ended up converting the two granaries into the first whiskey distillery in New York State since Prohibition.

Episode 405 Black Label Trading Company, Last Rites Robusto

Play

BACKGROUND: Black Label Trading Company (BLTC) was founded by James Brown who wanted to create a cigar company that catered to cigar enthusiasts who were tired of mainstream, mass produced cigars. He wanted a cigar company focused on defining unique flavor profiles that you don’t normally see in cigars these days.

Last-Rites02

BLTC debuted with not just one or two lines of cigars, but they launched the company with 6 unique cigar lines. They wanted to offer something for every palate and creating more blends, with fewer sizes seemed the way to do it.

Last-Rites01

This week’s featured cigar is the Last Rites. This cigar has an Ecuadorian Maduro wrapper and Nicaraguan filler and binder. The stogie I’m reviewing today is the 5-inch by 54 ring gauge Robusto.

FEATURED LIBATION: Heretic Evil Twin Red Ale
This dark, blood red ale has a rich malt character, without being overly sweet. It has a big hop character, without being overly bitter.

The ale weighs in at 6.8%ABV and 45 on the IBU scale.

Episode 404 A. Flores Gran Reserva Half Corona

Play

BACKGROUND: Ever since Abe Flores expanded his PDR Cigar factory in Tamboril, Dominican Republic, he has been a person sought after by many cigar brand owners to make cigars for them. Abe has created many cigar brands like Obsidian, Chaveta, La Palina Classic, Gurkha Ghost, and many others. He has become a much sought after cigar blender as well as a popular purveyor of fine cigars under his own label.

A-Flores-GR-01

This week’s featured cigar, the A. Flores Gran Reserva was debuted in the summer of 2013 and was one of two new lines released by PDR Cigars that year. The Gran Reserva is made with a Dominican Corojo wrapper leaf, with Dominican Corojo and Nicaraguan Habano in the filler blend and a Dominican binder. I’ve let these cigars rest in my humidor for 2 months prior to this review. This week’s featured Gran Reserva is the diminutive 3.5-inch by 46 ring gauge Half Corona.

A-Flores-GR-02TODAY’S LIBATION: Firestone Opal
Firestone Opal is a Saison style beer. Saisons are sturdy farmhouse ales that were traditionally brewed in the winter, so they could be enjoyed throughout the summer months. This is a very complex style that Firestone says, “merges Belgian tradition with West Coast style.” Saisons can be fruity in the aroma and flavor. You can typically look for earthy yeast tones, mild to moderate tartness, lots of spice and with a medium bitterness. They tend to be semi-dry with many only having touch of sweetness.

The Firestone Opal is dry hopped and comes at 7.5% ABV and tips the ibu scale at 35.

Episode 403 Avo Limited Edition 2014: Avo 88 Belicoso

Play

BACKGROUND: The 2014 Avo 88 blend has quite a mix of tobaccos, all from the Dominican Republic. In the filler, they have blended Dominican Criollo, Olor, Piloto and San Vicente tobaccos. The binder is also Dominican Olor and the wrapper is a Dominican Yamasá. As some of you might remember, the Yamasá wrapper leaf is grown by Davidoff in an area of the DR not heretofore known for cigar tobacco.

Each of the boxes comes in a glossy piano- lacquered finish. The Avo 88 comes in just one size, which is this week’s featured cigar. It is the 6-inch by 52 ring gauge Belicoso.

Aberlour-AbunadhFEATURED LIBATION: Aberlour A’Bunadh Single Malt Scotch
Aberlour single malt whisky is named after where it’s made. It means ‘the mouth of the chattering burn’ in Gaelic, and this wild mountain stream is part of the Aberlour story. A’bunadh means “original” or, “of the origin” in Gaelic, which is a reference to Aberlour’s founder, James Fleming.

This Scotch whisky is produced in the tradition of 19th century single malts. That is, it is matured in sherry casks and bottle at cask strength or 60.4%ABV and without the use of modern chill-filtering methods ensuring a dark and rich whisky color.

WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING AT STOGIE FRESH?
Last week, the FDA provided a couple of scenarios in their very lengthy document on their proposed rule for new tobacco products (including cigars) that they intend to regulate. Doc summarizes the latest documentation.
