Episode 424: La Palina Mr. Sam Robusto

Play

BACKGROUND: Mr. Sam was a term of endearment that was given to the founder by his workers at the original factory. The La Palina Collection Mr. Sam is rolled at the El Titan de Bronze factory in Miami, Florida. It is constructed from a dark Ecuadorian wrapper that surrounds a Nicaraguan binder and filler blend.
Mr-Sam

The Mr. Sam line consists of three sizes. This week’s featured stogie is, the 4.25 x 54 ring gauge Robusto.

FEATURED LIBATION: Hazelburn 12-year Single Malt Scotch
Springbank Distiller is the only distillery in Scotland to produce three different single malts using three different production methods. The Springbank scotch is a lightly-peated, maritime single malt, the Longrow is a heavily-peated scotch and the Hazelburn is a completely unpeated, triple distilled single malt.

Mr-Sam-Scotch

The Hazelburn Scotch Whisky is triple-distilled in copper stills, which insures that the whisky will be light, fruity and subtle.

Hazelburn saw its first distillation in 1997 and the first release of the whisky as an eight year old was in 2005. Hazelburn became available as a 12 year old for the first time in 2009.

This week’s featured cigar is the 5.5-inch by 52 ring gauge Cesar Maduro Robusto.

FEATURED LIBATION: Bowen’s Whiskey
Bowen’s Whiskey has a 100% corn base that is cut with water and then aged in barrels made from reclaimed, fire ravaged oak sourced from forests on central California’s Piute mountain range.

This is a 90-proof whiskey that people say has a smoky “California campfire” taste and, indeed, Bowen’s bills this product as a pure California Whiskey.

Episode 422: R&D Lab and Cigar by Tobacconist University

Play

BACKGROUND: The Tobacconist University recently created what they call their Research & Development program, which seeks to create educational content and cutting edge products to teach and enlighten consumers and tobacconists. Their first product is the R&D Cigar, which is a Brazilian Corojo blended that was produced by Jesus Fuego of J. Fuego Cigars.

R&D-01

The Tobacconist University certifies the information about these cigars by declaring the date of creation, the production quantity and the ingredients or components found in the cigars. They also provide information regarding processing and manufacturing techniques and the agricultural environments in which the cigars are produced.

R&D-02

Besides the finished cigars, the Tobacconist University has created the R&D Lab experiment to go along with the R&D cigars. The Lab protocol allows the smoker to taste the cigar’s puro components. They have developed individual small premium cigars that are made from just one of the 5 different ingredients or components of the cigar. Since there are five tobacco types in the cigar, there are also five 3.5-inch cigarillos made from each of the different tobaccos used in the cigar.

This week I will be joined by Christina Fontecchio and together we will assess both the R&D Lab and the R&D cigar. We’ll let you know our process in smoking all the puro components and well as the finished cigar and we will provide you with our tasting notes and evaluation of the process.

Play

BACKGROUND: Hex is part of the family of cigars from the Sindicato Cigar Group LLC, the first cigar company to be launched by a “syndicate” of veteran tobacco retailers. The owners of several large cigar retail stores launched Sindicato Cigars in January of 2013. The company, which is based in Boca Raton, FL, produces premium brands such as Sindicato, Affinity, Hex, and Casa Bella.

SPECIAL GUEST: Christina Fontecchio joins Doc to talk about featured cigar and libation.

Hex-and-Deadhead-Rum

FEATURED LIBATION: Dead Head Rum
Our libation of the week is Dead Head Rum. I had to buy this because the packaging intrigued me. The Dead Head rum has a cast plastic bottle that at the bottom looks like a shrunken head. Okay, that may all be marketing hype but I decided to try it anyway.
