Episode 457: Punch Signature Torpedo

Play

BACKGROUND: One of the most recent cigar projects from General Cigar Company is named: Punch Signature. Master Blender Agustin Garcia and his team kept true to the original Punch blend by using tobaccos from the same countries of origin.

They started working with a grower to cultivate a special Ecuadorian Corojo wrapper exclusively for this cigar. The wrapper is related to the original Cuban Corojo seed. The wrapper has a lot of natural oil, which makes the leaf silky and gives it elasticity. The binder is made from a proprietary Connecticut Habano leaf.

The filler leaves are from the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua and they are of the same variety as in the original Punch blend. Some of the filler leaves are very aged and others are less so. The aged leaves bring flavor and balance, and the newer leaves deliver more strength. It’s all about balanced flavor. Think of Punch Signature as a mix of tradition and modern taste.

FEATURED LIBATION: Jack Daniel’s Rested Tennessee Rye
In 2012, Jack Daniel’s created quite a stir when they released their Jack Daniel’s Unaged Rye. The release created a spirited debate about what exactly to call the Jack Daniel’s special release. Do you call it an unaged hiskey or do you call it a neutral spirit. They went with Unaged Rye and the rest is history, but now, a bit over two years later, Jack Daniel’s added to the dialogue with an updated special release called Jack Daniel’s Rested Tennessee Rye.

BACKGROUND: The Banker is the newest line under Altadis USA’s H. Upmann brand. The Banker pays homage to the original brand founders, August and Herman Upmann. After nearly 170 years, Altadis USA has recreated a blend in the same style as the original. The Banker by H. Upmann is crafted in the Dominican Republic using an Ecuadorian Habano wrapper, Nicaraguan binder and filler tobaccos from the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua.
