Episode 447: Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve Cigar

Play

BACKGROUND: The “Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve” cigar is a long-filler, premium hand made, small batch cigar created at Drew Estate in Estelí, Nicaragua. This historic cigar features a Kentucky Fire Cured Wrapper over a Mexican San Andres base wrapper. All of this covers a filler and binder of well-aged Nicaraguan leaf.

The cigars are available exclusively from Pappy & Co., and come in two sizes. The cigar I’m featuring today is the 5.25-inch by 52 ring gauge Robusto.

FEATURED LIBATION: Bulleit 10-year bourbon
Bulleit 10 is Tom Bulleit’s selected reserve. Select barrels of Bulleit Bourbon were set aside to age for 10 years. These were aged in charred American white oak barrels. Bulleit10 has the same high-rye content mash bill as the original. And, as a result, you can expect more of the spicy rye character in this bourbon. But you can also expect more oak influence. The original Bulleit is aged for 6-years in oak and the difference of four years of aging in oak is most certain to affect the outcome. The 10-year weighs in at 45.6%ABV.
