Episode 323 La Gloria Cubana Rabito de Cochino

Play

DESCRIPTION: Rabito de Cochino is a medium-bodied offering, made in the Dominican Republic, that features an Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper, a Nicaraguan binder and a hearty mix of Dominican and Nicaraguan tobaccos to round out the blend, bringing a new dimension to the classic taste of La Gloria Cubana.

La Gloria Cubana Rabito de Cochino

Within the clear-front, coffin-style boxes are three Rabito de Cochino cigars, tied together with the signature La Gloria Cubana yellow ribbon. Each cigar, besides having a pig-tail head, also sports an uncut foot.

Along with the interesting production and packaging characteristics, Rabito de Cochino is also a bargain, selling for $15 per box of three, or only $5 per stick. This week’s featured stogie is a 6 ½” x 46 ring gauge Lancero.

FEATURED LIBATION: Tomintoul (Tom-in-t’ owl) Single Malt Scotch
Tomintoul single malt whisky is a testament to master distiller, Robert Fleming, whose family has been making whisky in the Speyside Glenlivet region for four generations. Each of the single malts that he creates is smooth and mellow, which has led to the nickname for Tomintoul scotches, and that is, “the gentle dram.”

Currently, the Tomintoul portfolio consists of 9 different expressions of scotch. The one I’m featuring is called the Tomintoul Peaty Tang. “Peaty Tang”, is distilled in the traditional manner but, unusually for the Speyside Glenlivet region, it is crafted using peated malted barley to impart a distinctive smoky and heathery flavor.

DOC’S CIGAR POSTSCRIPT: Liga Privada “Dirty Rat”
This week’s postscript review is on the Liga Privada Dirty Rat, which I first featured in Episode 260 of the Stogie Fresh 5 podcast on Sunday, February 20, 2011. These stogies have been resting in their original wooden box in my humidor for 1 year, 6 months and I pulled out two more samples for this postscript review.
