BACKGROUND: Since 2011, Quesada Cigars has released its own Oktoberfest line of cigars, which are blended to be paired with beer. The line was introduced in two sizes initially, but since then the Oktoberfest line has become an annual release and has expanded its offerings each year. From 2011 to 2014, the Oktoberfest was a Dominican puro, but in 2015 two limited edition Nicaraguan puros joined the Dominican stable of Oktoberfest offerings.

The Double Bock comes in a plain, hinged wooden box with the Oktoberfest logo on the lid. This week’s featured stogie is the 7-inch x 47 ring gauge Double Bock (Churchill).

This is the coffee lover’s consummate beer. Brewed with an abundance of flaked oats, bitter and imported chocolates and two types of coffee. Weighs in at 8.3% ABV and 60 IBUs.

Episode 489: La Nox by La Flor Dominicana

BACKGROUND: The 2015 project cigar for Tony Gomez of La Flor Dominicana is, “La Nox,” which is Latin for “The Night.” This night theme is evident in the dark-as-night wrapper leaf. La Nox features a coal black Brazilian Cubra Maduro wrapper, which covers a Mexican San Andrés binder and concludes with a filler blend consisting of Dominican Pelo de Oro and Dominican Piloto Cubano.

The packaging features a moon-shaped circular box with a crescent moon partially covered by dark blue clouds. The La Flor logo rides inside the crescent and the La Nox designation is prominently displayed. The bands reflect the same thematic artwork and the lid of the box is made secure with two strategically-placed magnets.

Pricing for these cigars set at $11 per stick and they ship in 10-count boxes.

BACKGROUND: The 20th Anniversary cigar was released just prior to the 2015 Trade Show and is purported to be a medium to full-bodied offering. The blend includes a Honduran wrapper covering a Honduran binder and Honduran and Nicaraguan filler.

The Twentieth is made in Honduras and comes in 5 sizes, with prices ranging between $170-$230 per box.

FEATURED LIBATION: Alexander Murray & Company ‘Polly’s Casks’ Single Malt Scotch
This whiskey is a collaboration between Alexander Murray & Co and Firestone Brewing Company. Alexander Murray & Co has produced a lot of scotches, but Polly’s Casks is very different. The scotch was made at the Tullibardine distillery in the Scottish Highlands. After maturing in oak casks, the scotch was double-oaked in casks supplied by Firstone-Walker that were used to age some of their California barley wines, stouts and special Imperial bitters.

Episode 487: Kenbano Oro by Black Patch Cigars

BACKGROUND: Eric McAnallen, owner of Black Patch Cigar Company, recently announced the unveiling of two new cigars, which are produced in the Dominican Republic at the farms and factories of Jorge F. Carbonell. By blending his proprietary Kentucky-grown tobacco, Kenbano, with choice Dominican tobaccos, McAnallen has created two exciting new cigar blends: the Kenbano Oro (Gold) and Kenbano Platino (Platinum).

The cigars were blended in 2012 by a panel of testers who, after numerous blind tasting sessions, were delighted with the results. Production began in the summer of 2014 and the completed cigars have been aging for just over a year prior to shipment.

Kenbano Oro and Kenbano Platino come packed in boxes (or bundles) of 20 cigars.

FEATURED LIBATION: Woodford Reserve Distiller’s Select Bourbon
The Woodford Reserve Distillery is located in Versailles, Kentucky, a site that also happens to be a National Historic Landmark. Though all the stone buildings are over 100 years old, the distillery building is the oldest and dates back to 1838.

Woodford Reserve Distiller’s Select is a small-batch bourbon that is 90.4 proof or 45.2% alcohol by volume. It’s moderately priced at between $30-$40 per bottle, depending on where you buy it and it comes in a cool square-ish bottle that looks like an oversized hip flask.

BACKGROUND: The Surrogates Tramp Stamp is one of four cigars making up the Surrogates line for L’Atelier Imports. L’Atelier Imports is a spinoff company to Tatuaje Cigars that made its debut in the summer of 2012.

The Tablas Creek Vineyard Côtes de Tablas is a blend of four estate-grown Rhône varietals: Grenache, Syrah, Counoise and Mourvedre. Like most wines of the Southern Rhône, it showcases Grenache, featuring that grape’s characteristic generous fruit and refreshing acidity, balanced by the spice and minerality of Syrah, not to mention the wildness of Counoise and the structure of Mourvèdre.

The grapes for the Côtes de Tablas were grown on the Tablas Creek 120-acre certified organic estate vineyard on the Paso Robles West Side.

Episode 485: Enclave by A.J. Fernandez

BACKGROUND: The Enclave by A.J. Fernandez made its debut in the summer of 2015 and is another in the continuing series of masterpieces from the famed Tabacalera Fernandez factory in Esteli, Nicaragua.

Company founder, A.J. Fernandez, blended the Enclave along with his father Ismael. Enclave is a three-country blend of Cameroon binder, Nicaraguan filler (including the Piloto Cubano variety grown in Nicaragua) and an Ecuadoran Habano wrapper.

FEATURED LIBATION: Trader Joe’s 8 year Single Malt Irish Whiskey
This Whiskey is, as the name implies, a minimum of 8-year aged whiskey in the bottle, as opposed to a non-age-statement, which is likely to be 4-years and change, and is supposedly triple distilled (as opposed to double distilled) and matured “in single-use, bourbon oak casks.” It weighs in at 40% ABV.

Episode 484: La Antiguedad and Hotbox Coffee Porter

BACKGROUND: La Antiguedad by My Father Cigars is the second project to be developed by My Father Cigars after the mega success of Flor de las Antillas. The filler tobacco is cultivated entirely in Nicaragua on the farms of San Rafael, Las Quebradas, and San Jose, all privately owned and operated properties of My Father Cigars.

The cigar features a double binder comprised of Nicaraguan Corojo and Criollo leaf and is finished with an Ecuadorian Habano Rosado Oscuro wrapper. These tobaccos undergo a rigorous curing process of no less than three and a half years.

The Garcia family classifies the La Antiguedad as medium to full in strength, which offers complex yet balanced flavors. La Antiguedad comes in boxes of 20, in 5 different box pressed sizes.

Episode 482: La Colmena, Amado No. 36

BACKGROUND: During the summer of 2014, Warped Cigars announced its next release called, La Colmena. Colmena, which translated from Spanish means “beehive,” is made in just two sizes and is rolled at the El Titan de Bronze factory in Miami, Florida.

Each vitola is rolled by a single person, who is a category 9 roller hailing from Cuba. These cigars are unique in that they’re done in the style of custom-rolled cigars from Cuba, featuring entubado bunching, triple cap are finished with fantail caps and covered foot.

Because of this limited production, the cigars are typically in short supply, with production limited to a mere 100 cigars per day.

The La Colmena features an Ecuadorian Desflorado wrapper, an Ecuadorian binder and filler tobaccos from the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua.
