Episode 476: Davidoff Escurio

Play

BACKGROUND: At the heart of the Davidoff Escurio blend are two Brazilian varietals: Mata Fina and Cubra. The Cubra leaf is an original Cuban Criollo tobacco grown in Brazil, which adds a spicy pinch to the flavor, while the Mata Fina filler leaf is what gives the cigar its sweetness. The cigar is balanced with Dominican San Vicente, Dominican Olor and Dominican Piloto Cubano leaves wrapped in a dark Habano seed Ecuadorian wrapper. Thus, making this a 3-country, 6-varietal tobacco blend.

The Escurio comes in three sizes, and the one I’m featuring today is the 4.5 inch by 54 ring gauge Robusto.

FEATURED LIBATION: Hudson Baby Bourbon Whiskey
Hudson Whiskeys are the first legal pot-distilled whiskey to be produced in New York’s Hudson Valley. The Baby Bourbon Whiskey is made with 100% New York corn that is double distilled and aged in small American Oak casks.

Though the Baby Bourbon is what started the whiskey portfolio for Tuthilltown Spirits, they also have other great whiskies, including their classic Manhattan Rye, the Single Malt Whiskey, the Four Grain Bourbon, and their Corn Whiskey.

Jameson-Gold-ReserveFEATURED LIBATION: Jameson Gold Reserve
Jameson Gold Reserve, is a triple distilled blend of pot still and grain whiskeys. Gold Reserve is matured in a combination of Grade A casks that have been hand picked by Master Blender, Billy Leighton.

The Gold Reserve, besides using oak casks that have previously held sherry, also uses new oak barrels to age portions of the blend. The new oak, mixed with the sherry oak creates a synthesis of spicy new wood with complex sweetness. The rest of the Jameson range of whiskies, use primarily sherry-aged oak barrels and no new oak.

Episode 413 Davidoff Limited Art Edition 2014 Perfecto

Play

BACKGROUND: Today I will be featuring the Davidoff Limited Art Edition Cigar – The innovative tobacco creation begins with the popular Perfecto format. The beautiful Yamasá wrapper gives the cigar a unique color, an oily appearance and intense aromas. The binder is from the Dominican Republic and the filler is a very complex arrangement of tobaccos including leaves from various parts of the tobacco plant. Dominican Piloto Cubano Viso and San Vicente Viso are both from the upper third of the plant and the Dominican Piloto Cubano Seco and San Vicente Seco are both from the lower third of the plant. Using different tobacco varietals and using them from different parts of the tobacco plant, provide the nucleus of a complex cigar blend.

This week’s featured cigar is the 5.9 inches x 54 ring gauge Art Edition Perfecto.

FEATURED LIBATION: Glenfarclas 25-year Highland Single Malt Scotch
The Glenfarclas 25-year whisky has spent a tremendous amount of time in contact with the barrels in which it was aged. The longer the time in the barrel, the greater the influence of the barrel will be found in the whisky. This whisky is bottled at 43% ABV.

Episode 395 2014 Pro Cigar Festival Part 2

Play

BACKGROUND: Last week, I walked you through a pre-festival tour at Tabacalera Palma and our first festival tour at Tabacalera La Alianza. This week I continue the adventure with descriptions of my tours to Davidoff and La Flor Dominicana. Of course, I’ll also be recapping our Dominican nightlife with descriptions of dinners with our favorite cigar makers, “White Night” and the final festival party.

On hand once again to help me provide all the details of the event are Stogie Fresh team members John and Christina who shared in all the fun and lived to tell the story.

WHITE NIGHT: Everyone wore white as we celebrated at the Monumento a los Heroes de la Restauración (Monument to heroes of the Restoration War). The monument is located on a hill in the middle of Santiago, with spectacular views of the city and surrounding mountains. It also has a surrounding park and it is an attractive place at night where people go to relax.
