Episode 499: CroMagnon Cranium and Booker’s Bourbon

BACKGROUND: The RoMa Craft lineup consists of three core lines: The CroMagnon, the CroMagnon Aquitaine and the Intemperance. The CroMagnon possesses a dark and oily USA/Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper, and sports a Cameroon binder with three Nicaraguan varietals in the filler.

The CroMagnon comes in 6 cores sizes and the cigar I’m reviewing today, is the 6-inch by 54 ring gauge, Cranium.

The featured bourbon of this week, is batch 2016-01, also called “Booker’s Bluegrass.” It is named in honor of two of founding distiller Booker Noe’s favorite things: whiskey and bluegrass music. This batch features a custom label depicting a banjo, one of the distinctive instruments in bluegrass music.

Episode 495: Doc’s 10th Annual Central Coast Herf

BACKGROUND: It started 10 years ago and now it is a part of history. Last week, on a hot Central Coast weekend, the Doc’s 10th annual Central Coast Herf launched its final hurrah. The 10th annual and final bash drew the most people ever for the Friday night pre-event party. The greatest number of people also turned out for the Saturday main event and even the Sunday morning traditional breakfast was the best attended ever.

The theme for this year’s event was chosen to honor the Military.

Episode 479: RoMa Craft Tobac Neanderthal HN Figurado

BACKGROUND: After being introduced to a Pennsylvania Double Ligero known as Green River Valley Sucker One (GR-S1), RoMa Craft co-founder Skip Martin decided to use this tobacco as a catalyst for a full-bodied blend. This broadleaf from Pennsylvania possesses naturally high levels of nicotine and, in fact, two to three times the nicotine of any other leaf used by Martin in his factory in Estelí, Nicaragua. The end result was called: Neanderthal.

Neanderthal is constructed using a Mexican San Andrés wrapper, a Connecticut broadleaf binder and filler tobaccos from Condega, Estelí, Jalapa and Pueblo Nuevo in Nicaragua and with ligero provided from the Dominican Republic and Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvanian leaf contributes greatly toward making this blend the strongest that RoMa Craft Tobac has offered to date.

This week’s featured stogie is the 5-inch by 58 ring gauge HN Figurado.

FEATURED LIBATION: Laphroaig 10-Year Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky
The original Laphroaig, distilled the same way today as when Ian Hunter invented it over 75 years ago. In making Laphroaig, malted barley is dried or smoked over a peat fire. The smoke from this peat, found only on Islay, gives Laphroaig its particularly rich and distinct flavor.

Original Cask Strength Laphroaig is bottled at natural distillery strength, which in this case is 56.3%ABV.

Episode 425: Intemperance Brazilian Arapiraca

BACKGROUND: Intemperance is presented in two wrapper varietals; an Ecuadorian Connecticut-wrapped version called the EC XVIII and a Brazilian Arapiraca-wrapped BA XXI.

The BA stands for Brazil Arapiraca and the Roman numeral XXI represents the 21st Amendment to the Constitution of the United States, that which repealed prohibition.

The Intemperance is produced in the RoMa Craft Esteli, Nicaragua factory: NicaSueño and comes in 5 sizes. This week’s featured cigar is the 6.5-inch by 44 ring gauge Lonsdale.

FEATURED LIBATION: Intemperance Cigar Blend Coffee
Intemperance Cigar Blend Coffee is a small batch artisan release limited to 4,000 bags in 2014.

The coffee beans used in the Intemperance Cigar Blend Coffee are being grown in Nicaragua at an altitude of 1,100m. The selection, roast, grind, and packaging is completed under the supervision of Colin Ganley of Twin Engine Coffee Company in Nicaragua.

Episode 393 CroMagnon Aquitaine Mode 5

BACKGROUND: The CroMagnon Aquitane was launched by RoMa Craft Tobac during the summer of 2012. The Aquitaine is a spinoff of its namesake the CroMagnon and contains the same blend as the CroMagnon, including its unique Cameroon binder.

Though the Aquitaine features the same long-filler, full-bodied blend found in the original CroMagnon, the Aquitaine blazes its own path by featuring an Ecuadorian Habano Ligero wrapper. This is an eighth and ninth priming ligero leaf that is thick, oily and with the kind of texture that only comes from being higher on the plant and closer to the rays of the sun. The Aquitaine comes in 6 different sizes and the cigar I’m featuring today is the 5-inch by 50 ring gauge, Mode 5 Perfecto.

Bookers-BourbonFEATURED LIBATION: Booker’s Bourbon
Booker’s bourbon is the signature bourbon of Booker Noe, who was the master distiller at Jim Beam for 40 years. He introduced Booker’s True Barrel Bourbon in 1992. Inspired by a 200-year-old tradition, Booker’s was the first bourbon bottled straight-from-the-barrel, uncut and unfiltered. Booker’s is bottled at its natural proof of between 121 and 127, and aged between six and eight years. Add spring water to customize the taste and finish to your palate.

First created as a holiday gift for his special friends, Booker’s whiskey was so well-received that he decided to make it available to bourbon lovers worldwide.
