Episode 450: Room 101 Master Collection Three Mutante

BACKGROUND: The Master Collection Three began shipping nationwide in February 2015. The blend is comprised of tobaccos from three different countries; a Habano wrapper from Ecuador, a binder from the Dominican Republic and filler tobaccos from two growing regions in Nicaragua. As with all Master Collection blends, the experience is designed for those with a more refined palate.

The new Master Collection Three is packaged in white, piano finish boxes and contain either 20 or 50 cigars depending on the format. This edition is available in five formats and retails from $8.00 to $12.00 per cigar.

This week’s featured cigar is the 7-inch by 38 ring gauge Master Collection Three Mutante.

FEATURED LIBATION: Aberlour A’Bunadh Single Malt Scotch
Aberlour A’bunadh is a cask strength whisky that has achieved cult status among whisky connoisseurs.

Abundah is made using exclusively oak casks that have previously aged Sherry, but are first fill for Scotch. That is, though they have been used to age Sherry, this is the first time they’ve been used to age Scotch. After aging in these casks, the finished scotch is transferred straight to the bottle at Cask Strength, which is just a hair under 61%ABV or 122-proof.

Episode 439: Room 101 Uncle Lee

BACKGROUND: As the name suggests, Uncle Lee is a tribute to Matt Booth’s uncle, the man who introduced him to cigars. The Uncle Lee is made with an Ecuadorian Habano wrapper, Nicaraguan Corojo binder and Honduran Corojo and Dominican Piloto Cubano fillers. Pricing is set at $10 per cigar and the cigars are packaged in boxes of 10. The cigars are produced in Danlí, Honduras at the same factory responsible for producing all Room 101 cigars to date.

The Uncle Lee was officially introduced at the annual Christmas party at Stogie’s in Houston, with a wider distribution launch set for February. Initial production was set at 50,000 cigars, however it is still unclear how widely the Uncle Lee will be distributed.

The cigars come in just one size, and that’s the one I’m reviewing today; the 6.5 inch x 50 ring gauge Perfecto.

FEATURED LIBATION: Knob Creek Single Barrel Reserve Bourbon
This week’s featured libation is a regular favorite of mine. Knob Creek Single Barrel Reserve was brought into the portfolio in 2011. It is a big, unadulterated monstrous bomb of a bourbon. And yet, is smooth and complex.

Notably, it’s bottled at a 120 proof, so it is a monster and definitely worthy of your respect. I have tried this bourbon straight and it is just a bit too much for my palate, so I will be taking mine today with a few ice cubes.

Doc reveals his ‘Sweet Spot Bourbon’ list.

Episode 435: Room 101 Daruma Mutante

BACKGROUND: Matt Booth had both the historical figure and the doll in mind when he added a pictograph of Daruma (Buddhist Monk, Bodhidharma) to the cigar box of his cigar line of the same name. He had this to say about the Daruma: “We have named this series after the Daruma as he symbolizes resilience – a key ingredient to our success.

The Room 101 Daruma was released in the summer of 2012 and became the seventh blend produced under the Room 101 cigar brand. The name Daruma continues the theme of Japanese culture that was started with the Room 101 Namakubi. Matt Booth’s stylish, unique, artistic designs are influenced by traditional Japanese culture and American tattoo design.

Daruma 02

Made in Honduras, Daruma contains Dominican and Honduran long-fillers that are encased beneath a Brazilian Mata Fina binder and then finished with a smooth Ecuadorian Habano wrapper.

The Daruma comes in 5 sizes and the cigar I’m featuring today is the 7-inch by 38 ring gauge Mutante.

Episode 411 The Big Payback by Room 101 Cigars

SPECIAL EPISODE: The location of this week’s herf took place earlier at the Barrelhouse Brewing Company tasting room in Templeton, California. This was a meeting of the “Peripatetic Cigar Club” which seeks to pair a cigar and beer at local breweries. And, to put an exclamation point on the party, Matthew Jacobs, a brewmaster at Barrelhouse, rolled out a very special beer called, Bacchus.

The Big Payback was our featured cigar of the week. This cigar is for all those who have made the Room101 Brand a success in myriad dimensions. This week’s featured Big Payback is the Chavala, 5-inch by 50 ring gauge Robusto. This week’s cigarcast is: The Big Payback at Barrelhouse Brewing.

Episode 397 The Herf

BACKGROUND: What is a Herf? Well, you’ve probably heard me mention it enough times, but do you really know what it is and what is done at typical herfs?

Cigar Talk: Conversations of the Herf. Book by Terry Simpson

Cigar Talk: Conversations of the Herf. Book by Terry Simpson

Is a herf big or small? Does everybody smoke the same cigars or do you smoke different ones? What do you talk about at a herf? What do you eat? What do you drink?

A friend of mine, Dr. Terry Simpson, wrote a book about what goes on at a herf. In his book: Cigar Talk: Conversations of the Herf, he takes the reader inside the mystical, magical and congenial world of the “Herf.”

Doc Simpson defines a “herf” as simply, “…a gathering of cigar smokers to smoke cigars.” By extension, “herfing” describes the camaraderie and good cheer that accompanies a gathering of like-minded men and/or women who enjoy smoking premium hand made cigars.

In today’s cigarcast, you will listen in as Christina leads the conversations that we had with a few friends at a recent impromptu herf. During our recordings, we shared our thoughts about the cigars and libations that we had and we will talk about the different aspects of a typical, and non-typical, herf.

SPECIAL SEGMENTS: Interviews with Steve, Christina, Bil, Angel and Doc at a recent impromptu herf.
